Tabanan, Bali May, 2012 Alila Villas Soori is hosting its next Artist In Residence, Raymond Wiger, a master sculptor in the art of wire mesh. Wiger's works will be exhibited in June at the resort showcasing several inspired art pieces that was done on location.
Washington-born Wiger received his education in parochial and public schools and graduated from University of Maryland. From 1978 to 1992, he spent part of each year working at the Smithsonian Institution and the Library of Congress, and from 1982 through 1997 a part of each year working as a park ranger in National Parks across the United States.
Ray first started working in wire mesh as a sculpting material in the 1980's working with leftover screen mesh and proceeding to hardier materials. His works are exhibited throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia, and his sculptures are to be found in collections throughout the world. His works in a contemporary medium are celebrated for their fusion of impressionism with the classical form, the transformation of the cold industrial to the fleeting sentiment.
Raymond Wigers sculpture in wire mesh breaks away from the traditional sculpting materials of stone and clay. Wire mesh encompasses many dimensions at once. Metal, light and empty space are the three components that together in varying degrees bring new directions to classic figurative sculpture. Beyond the decorative, figurative work in wire mesh is meant to engage the intellect and curiosity of the viewer. At once animated and elemental, sculpture in wire mesh allows for a continued evolvement and reinterpretation of the work beyond its finished form.
