The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) tested the 2013 Malibu Eco to see how well the car will defend passengers from crash impact and rollovers, as well as preventing accidents via the Malibu Ecos electronic stability control feature. The severity of neck injuries was evaluated via simulated rear impacts.

In addition to the 2013 Malibu Eco, 14 other GM cars have been named IIHS Top Safety Picks. The Malibu was also awarded a five-star rating by the European New Car Assessment Program last fall.
