Since its introduction to the public in 2010, the Chevy Cruze has been received very well by drivers. Built to replace the Cobalt, the Cruze has been a step up in terms of build quality, ride characteristics, comfort, and finish and is one of GMs most popular compact offerings. After only its third year, the Cruze is topping the companys sales charts in the US. Production is scheduled to continue in Lordstown, OH for a second generation of the car and it is expected to get some exciting interior and exterior tweaks along with a new platform.
News from General Motors has revealed that there are big plans for the Chevy Cruze in the near future. It was recently announced that the Cruze is due to get a new generation for the 2015 model year. The automaker states that the updated model will feature a restyled and improved interior cabin, more cargo and storage space, new styling cues both inside and out, and improved fuel-efficiency! All of these changes are based on the new platform that is being developed currently. Known as the D2XX internally, it is a flexible platform that is expected to be the starting point for the Astra, Equinox, and Volt as well.
It is rumored that styling elements for the next generation of the Chevy Cruze will draw heavily from the larger Impala. The Impalas own redesign left it with a much more chiseled front end that lends to an aggressive and muscular look. The split upper grille was ditched for a single unit that blends with squared-off headlights. A lower grille at the bottom sits between LED fog lights and angular air dams on either side. Sources also claim that the Cruze will be offered as a sedan, hatchback, or a coupe, giving drivers the freedom to choose which body style works best for them.
Production dates for the Lordston, OH plant have still not been released, but GM has already invested 220M to prepare it for the new Cruze. Since the new generation is expected for the 2015 model year, it is safe to assume that the new Cruze will be available by the second half of 2014.
