Casey Volkswagen is excited to tune into Shark Week this year, which is currently running on Discovery Channel. That is because this year, the best German automakers have teamed up with Discovery Channel to develop a Volkswagen Beetle shark observation cage, which will be featured in three different clips throughout Shark Weeks run this year.
The Beetle was redesigned for the 2012 model year. Volkswagen hopes that this partnership with Shark Week will help raise awareness and give viewers the thrill of a lifetime. The Beetle cage is made of protective aluminum pipe and comes equipped with both an on-board air system as well as twin propellers, transforming the Volkswagen classic from bug to fish. Even with these aquatic alterations, the observation cage still closely resembles the Beetle. According to Luke Tipple, both a notable marine biologist and reoccurring guest of Discoverys shark programming, the cage is only off by a quarter inch in some spots from that of the actual Beetle.
The shark observation cage is not the first reworking of the Beetle. The Beetle has seen numerous transformations, including Beetles fashioned out of wood and some even made from New Orleans-style wrought iron. This isnt even the first venture the Beetle has taken into the water. Watertight Beetles have braved waters such as Lake Michigan, the Strait of Messina, and the Irish Sea.
