After the collaboration between Toyota and Subaru resulted in the super-successful Toyota 86/Scion FR-S/Subaru BRZ, Toyota seems to have found a great business plan. They seem to have found that by pairing up with other car companies to create a new and exciting product, both can benefit greatly. Perhaps not unrelated to the recent success of the Toyota/Subaru collaboration, the company has announced intentions to team up with BMW in order to produce less expensive, more advanced, fuel-efficient, and desirable products in the near future.
President of the Toyota Motor Corporation, Akio Toyoda, and chairman of the board of management for BMW, Norbert Reithofer, recently signed an agreement to collaborate in four distinct areas. These include: joint research and development of weight saving components and technology; joint development of fuel-cell systems; teamwork in powertrain electrification innovations; joint development of architecture and components designed for a future sports car.
In this partnership, two very different companies bring together their own areas of expertise. Toyota is the worlds leading seller of vehicles using hybrid powertrains. BMW is well known as one of the worlds foremost producers of luxury sports vehicles and is recognized for its vehicles handling characteristics and performance. If both companies bring their A-game to the table it could result in a game-changing vehicle that has excellent efficiency along with very sporty characteristics.
Mr. Toyoda stated in reference to the collaboration, I believe BMWs strength is in developing sports cars and I get so excited thinking about the cars that will result from this relationship!
