Launched in late 2010, the Volt is Chevrolets first production vehicle that can run in full EV mode, using nothing but stored electricity from its battery pack. After about two years of real world use and experience, General Motors has made some minor tweaks to the electrical system and the battery to increase range by nearly 9% compared to the 2012 model. This impressive increase in range has been achieved by nothing more than some changes to battery cell chemistry, increased storage capacity and a smaller empty buffer.
The changes have also improved battery durability in test cars and result in less degradation over time. The 2013 Chevy Volt will now be able to travel 38 miles relying solely on electric power. At the end of those 38 miles, the Volts 1.4 liter gasoline engine/generator takes over and can take the car another 344 miles on a full tank. The 1.4 liter itself gets 35 MPG city and 40 MPG highway. The real surprise comes when you realize that these battery changes have given the Volt a better MPG Equivalent, at 98 MPGe, than the Prius Plug-In.
