2012 Toyota Tundra Entrusted With Towing Space Shuttle Endeavour On The Last Leg Of Its Final Journe

Earlier this month, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. announced that the 2012 Toyota Tundra is scheduled to tow the space shuttle Endeavour on the last leg of its final trip. The shuttle is being retired from service and will go on display in the California Science Center on October 13, 2012.

While Endeavour will be flown into Los Angeles International Airport and towed along nearly 12 miles of highway and interstate roads by a trailer, the 2012 Toyota Tundra will lead the 300,000 pound vessel along Bill Robertson Lane in Exposition Park near downtown L.A. The truck pulling this shuttle will be completely stock and unmodified in any way. A special dolly has been developed by Toyota and The Sarens Group in order to tow this massive space shuttle.

While a stock 2012 Toyota Tundra with the 5.7 liter V8 is rated at 380 horsepower and 401 lbs-ft of torque and with a towing capacity of 10,000 lbs, extensive testing has proven that it is really capable of pulling all 300,000 lbs of space shuttle and dolly for this last mile. Since the Tundra will not have to climb any inclines or deal with stopping from highway speeds, the actually pulling capacity is more than sufficient.

At the end of the space shuttle Endeavours final journey, there will be a finish-line celebration at Exposition Park. This party will be an opportunity for the public to watch the towing and check out the space shuttle.

The 2012 Toyota Tundra CrewMax 1/2-ton pickup is known for being both capable and comfortable.
